Get Started Trademarks: Register Your Trademark in Italy and the European Union

A registered trademark gives you the exclusive right to use your name, logo or sign in connection with your goods or services — and the legal tools to stop others from using something confusingly similar. For artists, producers, labels, creative businesses and brand owners, trademark registration is one of the most cost-effective forms of intellectual property protection available.

The Get Started Trademarks package provides full assistance with trademark registration in Italy and the European Union, from the initial search through to registration and beyond.

What the Package Covers

  • Trademark clearance search — a search of existing registered and pending trademarks to identify conflicts before you file; covers the Italian register (UIBM), the EU register (EUIPO) and, where relevant, international databases
  • Availability analysis — legal assessment of the risk of opposition or refusal based on existing marks, including analysis of confusingly similar signs and the relevant Nice classification classes
  • Application preparation and filing — drafting and filing the trademark application with the relevant office (UIBM for Italy, EUIPO for the EU), with selection of the correct goods and services classes
  • Procedure follow-up — monitoring the application through examination, opposition period and registration; responding to any objections raised by the examiner
  • Post-registration monitoring — surveillance of new trademark applications that could conflict with your registered mark, with advice on whether to oppose

Italy, EU or Both?

Italian trademark (UIBM)

Protects your mark in Italy only. The fastest and least expensive option if you operate primarily in the Italian market. Filing fees are lower than EUIPO and the procedure is generally quicker.

EU trademark (EUIPO)

A single application that protects your mark across all 27 EU member states. The right choice if you already operate or plan to expand across Europe. One application, one fee, one registration — valid across the entire EU.

Both

In some cases, particularly for brands with strong Italian identity or local market presence, registering separately at both UIBM and EUIPO offers the most comprehensive protection. We advise on the best strategy based on your markets, budget and risk profile.

What You Can Register

The package covers all standard trademark types:

  • Word marks — the name, title or phrase you want to protect, regardless of typeface or design
  • Figurative marks — a logo, symbol or graphic element
  • Combined marks — name and logo together in a specific visual form
  • Other mark types — colour marks, shape marks and sound marks on a case-by-case basis

Who This Package Is For

  • Artists and musicians who want to protect their name, stage name or band name as a trademark
  • Film and TV producers registering a production title, format name or series brand
  • Creative businesses — design studios, labels, publishers, galleries — protecting their brand identity
  • Startups and entrepreneurs building a brand in the Italian or European market
  • International companies seeking Italian or EU trademark protection for an existing brand
